| The name salsa was given to the cocktail of partner dances that leapt the Caribbean sea with the Americans and Cubans who fled from Cuba following the revolution in 1958…..a communist revolution in this Caribbean island lead to a change in world thinking….and the start of the spread of this beautiful and sensuous dance The Cuban dances were well received in the USA but were difficult to pronounce. They appeared hot and spicy so were given the name ‘salsa’, after a sauce with a similar feel. However the numerous Cuban partner dancers, from which salsa originated, were for all ages and danced at family occasions and were not intended to be a hot and steamy nightclub dance. The American added their style to the dance and exported it to Britain around the 1980’s. After the collapse of the Berlin wall and the Soviet Union in the early 1990’s another wave of Cuban emigrating to Europe brought the dance to our shores straight from Cuba . Our arrangement hopefully captures some of this!! Today we see a mix of Cuban and American influence. We teach the basic steps so you can add your own style…and go to any club and feel comfortable. Carl is a classically trained dancer so will get someone with endless left feet to dance; all it takes is some time and patience….why not come and join us? We meet every Friday, usually in the main church hall, and run beginners, improvers/intermediates and an advance class. After the classes we stay open for ‘free’ dancing to practice the moves until one. And the price? Just £8 which includes as many classes as you like, and then club afterwards until 1am( £6 after 10pm) We would love to see you there; what ever level you dance to you will definitely improve….and enjoy |
